Montessori Tides School is a proud promoter of the Children’s Garden workshops at Jarboe Park in Neptune Beach. The events are free and open to all ages. Peggy Nolan and Kelly Johnson are stewards of the garden. They have a rich history in gardening and in Montessori education, including at Montessori Tides School. You may find them working as substitutes in one of our classes from time to time. Last year, Kelly was a guest speaker for a Parent Education Night, and she helped begin the gardening program at MTS. She’s also the author of an inspiring book, “Wings Worms and Wonder,” a guide for creatively integrating gardening and outdoor learning into children’s lives.
This duo brings to the garden fun and practical hands-on learning for connecting children to their natural world and their food sources.
You can join them for spring planting this Saturday, March 29, at 9 a.m. Current and former MTS students – including some who now have children of their own – often attend the workshops. It’s incredible to watch the children’s amazement as they pull up a carrot. It’s even more incredible to see so many children excited to eat and take home their harvests of kale, broccoli and other freshly picked produce.
For this weekend’s workshop, Peggy says, “The weather is forecasted to be warm, and perfect for planting with a chance of rain to welcome the new sprouts into the garden. It might be the perfect day to wear your garden boots!”
If you can’t make Saturday’s workshop, Sunsets in the Garden has returned with the longer days. Enjoy the Community Garden on Wednesday nights from 6:30 p.m.
