December comes with its holiday season themes.
The children decorate paper trees with glue and paint. Number 4 is on the drop box. We have gingerbread and snowman pegs to place in a small ‘block’ with holes. The mystery bag holds seasonal items like a pine cone, a red apple, a wreath, a snowman, a nutcracker, a little pine tree. The children reach into the mystery bag. They feel the object before they see the object, which helps develop the three dimensional stereo-gnostic sense.
A small box holds more winter objects: skates, candy canes, bells, a small Santa, a puppy with a bone for present etc. Many of the children still love to maneuver small cards and pictures into slots, which is great for fine motor development, and all the seasonal depictions offer huge language enrichment.
Miss Hillary made us some new play dough, this time white peppermint scented with glitter! On the back deck the children continue to enjoy scooping, pouring, and stirring the flour in the pots and pans. A little wind up train challenges little fingers to make the train go.
We work at spinning a little dreidel while we sing a dreidel song. Bell bracelets invite children to sing and dance. 5 Gingerbread men to be counted. Every toddler listens intently when the gingerbread man says “Catch me, catch me, if you can! You can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man!”
Here are a few songs we’ve been singing:
Five little bells hanging in a row,
The first one said: ” ring me slow.”
The second one said: “ring me fast.”
The third one said: “ring me last.”
The fourth one said: “I’m like a chime.”
The fifth one said: ” ring me at holiday time”
Ring, ring, ring the bells, ring them loud and clear,
To tell the children everywhere, the holidays are here!
3 little Santa’s I once knew,
Fat one skinny one tall one too,
But the one little Santa with the little red nose,
He leads the others with a Ho, Ho, Ho.
Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel,
I made it out of clay,
When it is dry and ready,
A dreidel I may play!
5 little gingerbread laying on a tray,
One jumped up and ran away,
Saying: “catch me, catch me, if you can..!
“you can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man!
4 little gingerbread laying on a tray…..
We have a few announcements:
Nia, who turned three this fall will transition to Miss Kathy’s class in January. Luke will be moving with his family to Washington. We wish them all much success in their new settings!
On Friday December 20, we will have a small holiday celebration in our class. It will be only for 45 minutes, because of our school’s small parking lot all celebrations will be staggered. We will start at 8:45 sharp with a few of our favorite songs of the season. Perhaps aim for your arrival between 8:30 and 8:40. After that we’ll brunch buffet style, so feel free to skip breakfast and brunch at school.
I hope to see you all Friday!
