What is F.A.C.E.? This was my question to Ms. Nancy and Ms. Doran after viewing several fantastic pictures taken by Ms. Marcia, Graham’s mom, of the lower and upper- elementary students gathered together, wearing t-shirts and holding awards. The title of the album was “Face Graduation”. From the smiles on their faces, it was obvious this time was joyous on so many levels and clearly they had just accomplished something big.
Turns out F.A.C.E. is a fitness and character education program our elementary students participate in on Thursday afternoons. Executive Director and teacher, Kirk Farber says, “Fitness training is essential, but CHARACTER BUILDING is Priceless!” Utilizing a component program of F.A.C.E., Kirk is helping today’s youth become tomorrow’s successful leaders by combining confidence, growth and positive attitudes. The focus is on fitness to help reduce obesity in children along with character education to build self-esteem and respect.
Kirk implements his program at Montessori Tides School through a combination of martial arts, jump rope, and juggling, along with a theme each week. The “word of the day” (Kirk calls it), is something like, respect, responsibility, what I want to be when I grow up, etc. At the end of each class, they have public speaking and a few children are chosen to get up in front of the class and say the “word of the day” and what it means to them. Kirk uses the subliminal concept of building self-esteem and confidence for children through performing and speaking in front of others, yet keeping an emphasis in fitness and coordination.
“It is an awesome program and Kirk does a wonderful job with the children” said Ms. Nancy. “This program is not only touching our students current needs, but this experience is also leaving an imprint that lasts a lifetime. We are thankful and honored to add an extracurricular activity that complements our Montessori curriculum.”
