Montessori Tides teachers are known for their ability to perceive and anticipate the coming of great things. Ms. Nancy, Lower-Elementary teacher is doing just that. In fact, she is looking so intently into the 2012-2013 school year; she’s managed to pull her student orientation into July!
To better share the fabric of the classroom and orient first year students in establishing themselves in their new environment, Ms. Nancy decided to do things a little different by bringing her new students in for a two week summer orientation. With fewer students in the room, this allows the students to become more acquainted with the classroom systems, and with her. This time is especially helpful for elementary students who are new to our Montessori School.
To assist the first year students, Ms. Nancy invited any second year returning elementary students to join the orientation to be mentors. They also aid in modeling the flow and freedom of the environment. Apart from that, those who returned have a time of refreshing to sharpen and practice their skills.
To guide and provide the experiences needed to enhance each child’s learning, Ms. Nancy began her beginning lessons. She points out, “Orientation helps the child become familiar with the classroom systems while giving me the opportunity to observe and present lessons to each child. In this way, I gain understanding of each child’s individual skill level, to really personalize the education sooner.”
An integral part of the overall daily success of the lower elementary classroom webs from each child’s ability to allocate their time between academic responsibilities and caring for their classroom environment. Orientation helps lay the groundwork and gives the child understanding of their new environmental responsibilities. These include: lunch set up and clean up; renewing the environment at the end of the day (trash collecting, table collecting, sweeping, etc.). The new elementary child is learning to balance a striking degree of freedom with a sense of responsibility and self-determination.
Ms. Nancy’s goal in working together with the children over the summer is to see each one move forward, which in turn, gives her a glimpse of all that she’s anticipating – a peaceful and harmonious community of learners.
