For the last few weeks, we have added a new component to our Peace Education series in the classroom. We are working through a program called the Mind Up Curriculum. It has brain-focused strategies for learning and living. The children have enjoyed learning about three parts of the brain, the prefrontal cortex (our wise leader), the amygdala (our security guard), and the hippocampus (our memory saver).
As we learn about the parts of the brain, we learn how important it is to stop, breathe and listen. We are learning which parts of the brain create impulse and which part helps us make mindful decisions. We are working on understanding what a mindful act is and what an unmindful act is. Soon, we will learn about nerve cells and how they carry messages through electrochemical impulses to signal the brain.
If you would like to support this curriculum at home, you can incorporate sitting, breathing and listening when the opportunity for settling the body and mind presents itself. Journaling or drawing about mindful and unmindful acts is something the children have enjoyed a lot.
We will go to the Old Florida Museum in St. Augustine on Tuesday, March 7. We will leave by 8:45 a.m. and return by 2:45 p.m. Please let me know via email if you’d like to chaperone this trip.
Parent/Teacher conferences will begin Wednesday, March 1, and go through Wednesday, March 8. I have added a Saturday, March 4. Unfortunately, there is no child care available for that day. The sign-up sheet will be available at drop off and pick up.
I have allocated 20 minutes for each conference. If you feel you will need more time than that, please sign up for two slots or email me so that we can schedule a different time. If you have two children with me, sign up for two slots. If none of the times listed works for you, email me so that we can work together to schedule a time that will work.
Conferences are not mandatory, but I appreciate the opportunity to work with you to provide the best education opportunity possible for your child.
