Lower Elementary rocking math, language

An Upper Elementary student on community service helps a Lower Elementary student with his math facts.

The children are hard at work practicing skills from weekly math and language lessons. The first-years have been practicing computation with the Montessori Golden Beads, a material designed to help children understand place value and the decimal system. They benefit from the concrete experience of physically exchanging 1-unit beads for a 10-bar of beads.

Second-year students have been working on analyzing the parts of a sentence to learn how to construct sentences properly. The oldest children are cultivating their ability to compute equations with multidigit multipliers using the Checkerboard.

The cultural lessons have included more physical geography, the Five Kingdoms of Life, and our solar system. This coming month, we will go more in depth with botany and zoology studies.

Community Service

We have begun community service for the school. Our students are helping in the younger classrooms. They read with the children, play outside with them, and even give them lessons. Children from Upper Elementary also have come into our classroom to help with sight word or math fact flash cards.

Thanksgiving Feast

The elementary classrooms will come together to enjoy a feast on the Tuesday before the Thanksgiving holiday. This is a wonderful time for the older and younger elementary children t spend time together as a large group, sharing thoughts about what they are thankful for and enjoying a meal.

Ms. Katie is working with the students this year in the classroom garden.

Thank you

We appreciate the parents who have volunteered to help the class in various ways: chaperoning field trips; cooking with the class; making work; sending in library books; and taking home recyclables. We would like to especially thank Ms. Katie for her efforts in the garden. Ms. Katie comes in a few times a month to help keep that space beautiful. She has helped the children learn about growing and cultivating all kinds of plants. Last week, the children were able to harvest some vegetables! Thank you, Ms. Katie, for blessing up with your green thumb.
