Montessori Tides Tip of the Day: Children Under 4 May Prefer to Play Alone

Montessori Tides Tip of the Day is designed to help adults better understand the needs of the preschool child. Each tip implemented will help bridge the home and classroom environment for your preschooler.

Some children under age of 4 may still prefer to play alone or parallel play as they did as toddlers.  In the Primary classroom many children age 3 & 4 still like working best on individual activity, parallel to one another.  In the home children under the age of 4 often want to work the same way when other children are invited into the home; they enjoy playing in the same area with another child, but not directly interfere.  If so, they may prefer to sometimes interact with an adult instead of other children.  Be aware that this may frustrate other children, or have difficulty understanding this orientation.  However, it is important that the adult not force the child to interact with the other children until the child feels comfortable and DISPLAYS developmental readiness.
