Have you ever been to an outdoor concert? Wasn’t it great to hear the sounds move through the air and the freedom to sway and move to the music? Children have this same innate capacity to appreciate music in the great outdoors, and uninhibited inclinations to move, dance, and sing to various forms of music.
At Montessori Tides we strive to feed the child’s openness to music by providing outdoor spaces where children can come in touch with their ability to create sounds and rhythms.
Last year Ms. Deanna created this musical fence on the toddler playground. (She used various household items like: pots and pans, metal baskets, wooden spoons, and medal chimes. She screwed some items onto the wood fence while hanging other items from hooks.) Having this music fence added a sensory dimension to our outdoor space like nothing else. Children can strike, swipe, and pound the fence to “find” sounds, just as they find and hear different sounds in nature. Sometimes a child’s face will light up at the sound he/she created as it resonates through the air. But the neatest thing is the pleasure a child finds in others experiencing it with them; creating a harmonious tune.
Last year, we also added a Tongue Drum to the Primary/elementary playground. Children enjoy the different sounds it produces and the way it resonant, bongy sounds that vibrate up and through their body. Children have found creative ways to make musical beats and send messages to a far off land!
This 4ft. Musical Fence is a simple instrument that teaches many lessons about rhythm, movement, and sound. The beauty of the Fence, is that its two sided. This instrument can provide musical fun for both toddler and primary/elementary students. Maybe even one day play a tune off one another.
Dr. Shinuchi Suzuki pointed out, “What does not exist in the cultural environment will not develop in the child.” We are thrilled to provide young children with natural exposure to different musical instruments, sounds, and rhythms. Stop by our playground anytime for a personal outdoor concert.
