New year brings new study topics

A Lower Elementary student works on a map of the world. The class will focus on North America in the coming weeks.

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday break. We are excited to start the new year with the introduction to the map of North America, the Timeline of Life, the water cycle and water forms. We will continue our studies of animal classification, body functions and plants. The Timeline of Life is a big lesson in the Lower Elementary curriculum. We study the evolution of life, beginning with the Paleozoic Era, from the fossil record. We explore the different plants and animals that appear throughout the eras.

Reminders

Jewelry can be really distracting for children at school. Items that can be played with, will most likely be played with. This keeps your child from having a successful day, and it distracts others. Following the holidays when new items may have been acquired, I wanted to give you a gentle reminder to please be mindful of your child’s attire and remember our school’s dress code.

Encouraging your child to read and reading with your child will support them to become confident readers. For children who are beginning readers, daily practice is crucial for the development of skills.

Appropriate duration of time for reading:
First-years: 15 minutes
Second-years: 20 minutes
Third-years: 30 minutes

Parent Volunteers

Please check the left side of the snack calendar each month to see if you are signed up to volunteer. The children love reading to adults, and cooking is a great learning opportunity. They enjoy every opportunity to work with other adults on these specific areas of focus. Thank you for giving your time.
