As one of the many Practical Life activities found in the Montessori classroom, Scrubbing provides several essential skills that lay the foundation for the child’s later success in school. Important work habits such as concentration, coordination, order and independence are all helped to develop as a direct result of the child’s repeated engagement in these exercises. In addition, Scrubbing also provides something beyond the expected physical and intellectual benefits. It is scrubbing, in particular, that seems to produce an inner calm in the child and a sense of peacefulness, that when completed, the child seems to see his classmates in a new “spiritual light”, is more responsive to adult direction, and displays a type of inner discipline that is unique to this particular activity.
So as you can see, Scrubbing not only prepares the child for later academics, but also for success in life!
