The Value of Montessori

Primary students in Ms. Kathy’s Primary class work together on a math activity.

For most parents, the obvious benefit of a Montessori education is their child’s academic achievement. However, there is much more your child gains from attending a Montessori setting. The following elements are considered the most valuable aspects of the Montessori approach, since these are the human qualities that will help prepare your child for life.

Academic preparation: Montessori helps students attain skills that allow them to become independently functioning adults and lifelong learners.

Intrinsic motivation: Innate desire drives Montessori children to engage in activities for enjoyment and satisfaction.

Internalized ground rules and ability to work with external authority: Montessori children develop inner discipline working in an environment where freedom exists within limits.

Social responsibility: Montessori children tend to be sensitive to the needs of others.

Autonomy: Montessori students tend to become self-directed, composed and morally independent.

Confidence and competence: As confident, competent individuals, Montessori children tend to experience more success.

Spiritual awareness: Compassion, empathy and a sensitivity to life are all typical qualities of a Montessori child.

Ms. Kathy reads a book during group as part of the class’ celebration of Earth Day.

Classroom Happenings

Our celebration of Earth Day on April 22 was a special day for the children. As we all gathered for a group presentation during our morning group time, we talked about giving thanks for the many gifts of the earth and all the ways we can take part in actively caring for the earth, especially its creatures, both big and small.

We concluded our lesson by deciding to create a bird habitat, which will be located behind our Primary playground. Every day during our afternoon playtime, each child will take a turn to help prepare the habitat.

About Kathy Graham

It was in Chicago, Illinois, where Kathy Graham first experienced a Montessori Classroom. After only a short period of time, through her internship at a local Montessori School, she became increasingly aware of her profound calling as a Montessori Teacher. She knew this was a special place and fell in love with the Montessori Method of Education. Since then, Graham has established herself as a strong advocate of creating beautiful environments inside the school and in her world of life. For over thirty six years now, she continues to conduct herself as an extraordinary model in these ways: a Montessori parent; Montessori Teacher; founder/director of the very first Montessori School in Jacksonville, Florida; mentor; friend; and her newest blessing, grandparent. Graham say’s “Montessori gives a feeling of hope for a better world because of what we give our children, the future leaders of tomorrow.”
