Tim Deegan, Chief Meteorologist for First Coast News, star struck our lower and upper elementary students with a visit to Room 3 on October 30th, 2013.
Tim is well known here for his involvement with our school as a former Montessori Tides parent and for his interest in teaching our students about meteorology over the past 5 years.
Tim has a way of captivating the children’s interest as he shares real life stories (like the time he flew with the “hurricane hunters” into the eye of the most powerful Atlantic hurricane on record, Hurricane Gilbert!) The students are involved in open dialogue on topics such as lightening, hurricanes, tornados, wind and rain. It’s an awesome learning experience!
When Tim Deegan walked into Room 3, he was greeted with a warm and unlikely introduction. The children sang aloud The Cloud Song:
The puffy, flat, white clouds
We call them cumulus
Hi-ho-a-cloud-e-oh
The puffy, flat, white clouds
The feathery-thin, white cloud
Are cirrus high in the sky
Hi-ho-a-cloud-e-oh
The feathery-thin white clouds
The gray and foggy clouds
Are stratus low in the sky
Hi-ho-a-cloud-e-oh
The gray and foggy clouds
The dark and stormy clouds
Watch out for nimbus rain
Hi-ho-a-cloud-e-oh
The dark and stormy clouds.
“In 32 years I’ve never had children sing to me,” responded Tim, “much less, a song about meteorology!!”
His visit was meaningful for everyone. I think he may have inspired a few more sky gazers like himself!
