We are officially one month into school, and our class is doing beautiful things socially and academically. Every day I am amazed by this group of students and their respect for one another, depth of thought and ability for concentration. If you were to observe, you would see our students revisiting and exploring deeper with the beginning of the universe lesson, followed shortly by the Timeline of Life, Timeline of Humans, Beginning of Writing and History of Numbers.
Unlike Lower Elementary, these lessons are no longer an impression. They have become the bud by which every exploration in the Upper Elementary class begins to grow. As these students are going into their second creative period of development. They are losing their sensitivity for order and need concrete examples for why we focus on our subjects: botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, history, languages and mathematics.
You also would see many community-building activities as they take ownership for their space by deciding on the jobs that need to be done, who will do them and when they will be done. We are looking forward to the potential of a community with strong leaders and so many mature individuals.
We have 12 caterpillars that are calling our room home. The children have been very responsible in caring for them and feeding them daily. Please come by and take a look!
One of the things I value most about Tides is the quality of relationship we have with our families. We believe that quality communication is very important and nothing unknown should be discussed during conferences. However, it is a great time to look at your child’s notebooks and discuss Montessori philosophy. Our first conference will be next month. If an observation of the class would better fit your needs, please let me know!
We have started daily group snack. Snack has created a community-building opportunity and a focus on sharing our favorite things with our friends! Please remember that we are an all-organic school, and we appreciate that you care for our children’s needs by providing well-rounded snacks that will fuel their brains and bodies.
We are looking for a few donations to help improve our environment. Any of the following would be really appreciated:
- Essential oils for our diffuser.
- Large ceramic planters for the back deck.
- Organic potting soil for our garden adventures.
- Shoeboxes for our dioramas.
It’s almost time to celebrate Halloween! Hopefully, you all read our homework philosophy that was sent home in your child’s open house folder. Your first family project of the year is just around the corner. Look for more info coming shortly.
